Well, you actually only realize it in hindsight.When you find yourself gazing out the window, or at the small corner of the wall, or up at the ceiling. Youre so fixated on that one space, as if it were reeling you in, looking to talk to you or maybe even advise you. Once your consciousness comes back, you realize that you were lost in a moment. An imaginative glimmer in time.Something has preoccupied you. Perhaps good, perhaps bad. But its preventing you from action.Whatever past idea, struggle, thought, inspiration, missed chance, fear, anxiety or stress that has you captured, know that you may have to modify your process. In order to modify your process, you must begin with changing your habit. As the saying goes, the definition of ins anity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.Take writing, for example. Every writer knows what writers block is all about. We feel completely stuck, unable to even commit the action to hitting the keys on our laptop. Its like were physically and mentally frozen. But in order to get to modifying the process, we first must change our habit. We must try something new when what weve trusted is bedrngnis working.In order to break one habit, we often have to break another, or at least course-correct our process. The familiar advice of the conditions are never going to be right to begin - just go for it rings true here. When youre really stuck, forget about whatever process youve been following. It may not work that day or that hour.If youre normally a very fluid, creative writer that can pump out 1,000 words in the span of 15 minutes, perhaps youre best positioned to just start writing your ideas and thoughts down in bullet point bursts. I like to refer ba ck to a notepad or journal of ideas or unfinished thoughts that were meant to receive new life at a future date.If youre launching a new app or digital marketing platform and your golden idea has yet to take off, it doesnt meant that your idea is bad or wrong. But it may mean that you need to change your habit of approaching your business. You may need to course-correct and try a new marketing strategy. You may have a great product, but youre unsure of the most effective way to sell.Try a new approachOnce you make a decision, the universe conspires to make it happen. - Ralph Waldo EmersonDismiss the notion that you will focus your time and energy on anything else for a set period of time. Stay focused on the task at hand. This steeling your mind to be more productive will develop consistency and a commitment to do what you said you would do. Modify your habit. Modify when you choose to work on what youre doing. If necessary, focus on the how.Re-calibrate your why to make sure this is crystal clear and filled with purpose that aligns with your mission and definition for success. Your business plan. Your whole reason for doing what youre doing. Start with the fundamentals which will guide you and let you know about your habits and decision-making.Whatever fear or anxiety that you feel when youre unable to move forward, think clearly, execute or even plan is far worse when its prolonged. By taking action, you block out that which holds you back. You press forward. To move forward, you dont move backwards. But, you do use your past experiences and perspective of lessons learned to educate you on how to improve and commit today.Turn to reminders of great work youve done, compliments youve received and honors bestowed upon you in the past. This boosted assurance and rush of adrenaline will always reboot confidence and hope. Confidence and hope are essential to taking action and finishing what youve started.Dont make someone elses problem your own. Absorbing someone elses guilt, getting hung up on their issues or problems is mentally taxing and defeating. This sorrow deflates us and contributes to inertia. It can occur between a boss and subordinate or between co-workers. Its marked by ongoing harassment and ridicule, often verbal but sometimes physical. They Make the Bully Feel Insecure Bullies target people who pose a threat to them in the workplace. A bullys target is often smart, competent, and self-assured. In fact, the most veteran and skilled person in the workgroup is often a target. A bully might feel that herbei skilled competence throws a glaring spotlight on his own inadequacies, compelling him to bring her down a notch, perhaps even b y sabotaging her work or spreading lies about her. Workplace bullies often target employees who are liked by their supervisors and praised for their performances. Bullies want to elevate their own status within the organization by pushing others down. Competence translates to competition for a bully. Bullies often have poor coping skills and tackle their insecurities by manipulating others to raise their own perceived self-importance. Bullies are often vulnerable themselves, so bullying helps them conceal their own insecurities and create the appearance that theyre in control. Caring, Social, and Collaborative Co-Workers Workplace bullies target those for whom collaboration, compromise, team building, and consensus-seeking are second nature. While these character traits are important elements of a healthy work team, they ironically can exacerbate bullying. Employees with a strong support network within the workplace, who share solid friendships and associations with others, are often targeted because the bully is excluded from these inner circles. She might act out of resentment and frustration. Co-workers who are kind and tend to avoid conflict might be targeted because they appear weak and unwilling to fight back. Fair, Honest, and Ethical Co-Workers Bullies often focus on employees who are fair, honest, and ethical or those who have strong morals and integrity. This is especially the case when the bully doesnt possess these traits himself or if his targets values conflict with his own. Whistleblowers who expose fraudulent or unethical practices are often bully targets. Men vs. Women Women are bullied mora frequently than men. In fact, the same survey by the Workplace Bullying Institute found that 70 percent of bullies were men and 65 percent of their targets were women. The survey also revealed that women bullies target women 67 percent of the time. Hispanics report the highest rates of workplace bullying at 26 percent. African-Ameri cans are the second highest at 21 percent, and are Asians experience the least 7 percent. But keep in mind that the supervisor might actually support the bully, or the bully might be so valuable to the company that the supervisor doesnt want to rock the boat by addressing the problem. You probably cant change a bully, but you can change the way you react to bullies and their behavior.

It may seem extreme, but I had a great relationship with my boss (who remains a mentor to this day), and knew that he would be supportive of my decision. I wanted to leave him in a good place, with a strong team led by a Controller who had the benefit of an extended on-boarding process. I helped my boss hire my successor, and trained her before I left. I also timed my departure to happen after key annual deliverables were completed. My boss has been appreciative ever since.Create a transition plan. Think of it as a care packet for your successor. List key deadlines, status on the projects you wont be able to complete, and critical bits of information that you would want to know if you were in th eir shoes.Skeptics may argue that your successor wont read this document, and you are wasting your time. That is always a possibility. The way I see it, it does not matter whether your successor uses the document or ignores it. For the rest of your professional life, you get the benefit of knowing that you have done your best to leave your area in a good, easy-to-pick-up condition. That is worth something.3. Communicate.This may be difficult for some of you, particularly if you did not enjoy a smooth relationship with your boss or co-workers. If you would rather resign by text and never see the office again, resist the temptation to do so.This is not the road to take when determining how to quit a job.Remember that your communications plan must start with your direct manager. Regardless of his personality and relationship with you, he deserves to know first before you tell co-workers or his superiors. Get clarity on how he or she wants to handle the communication to the rest of the office.Give some thought to how you tell your story think strategically about how you explain your decision to pursue another opportunityand do your best to stay positive. Saying that you hate it there, and wish you had never taken the job, may not be the most constructive path. Be honest, but consider framing the departure in a positive light.Stay professional. Even if your manager becomes upset. Be clear that you are available and willing to help create a transition plan for your successor. Express your intent to leave your projects in good shape, with open items and deadlines defined, to minimize loss of momentum.Have a plan in case your manager comes back with a counter-offer. Have personal clarity on what it would take for your old company to keep you. If the answer is nothing, thank your manager and stick to your guns.Lastly, be prepared to be escorted out after giving your notice. If by quitting your job you are taking a position with a competitor, your manager may have sec urity staff watch you as you pack up your personal belonging, and walk you out of the building. Remember that this is not personal your manager is simply following corporate policy.4. Keep your focus.I know that you are excited about whats next for you, but dont let it fool you into thinking that what you do during your final weeks at your old job doesnt matter. Show up, and work diligently until your very belastung hour. Stop spending so much moneyStop spending so much moneyWere spending too much money (begone Amazon Prime, you evil immediate gratification enabler) and part of the reason is its just so incredibly easy.Where there was once only the vorkaufsrecht of making a day of heading to a store and ponying up your hard-earned cash for a well-researched or much-needed item, you can now scroll, click, and have something brand new and shiny delivered to your door in under an hour. In the recent book, Dollars and Sense How We Misthink Money and How to Spend Smarter, behavioral economist Dan Ariely, and co-author Jeff Kreisler break down some of the reasons were just so stupid about spending.In an interview with CNN Money about trying to fix our spending, Ariely said, We can wait for someone to solve it for us, or you can try to do your own financial hacking yourself.Here are some spend less hacks worth thinking about1) Stop making it so easyIf buying that needless widget meant there was more of a pai n point involved in the process, we might notlage do it quite that often or quite that easily. But since its easier than ever to buy, we do. Try disconnecting auto pay from your accounts. Or give yourself a new accountability tool. What if you had to post every single spend on your Google calendar and highlight it in red? Spend shaming might really become a thing.2) Highlight your savings not spendingAriely mentions that while we share every detail of our shopping lives angeschlossen or with friends, we dont spend that much time talking about how much weve saved or invested. Maybe its time to seriously change that collective conversation.3) Stop going digitalBelieve it or not, while paying your bills automatically may seem like the best approach, you might be making it way too easy to overspend. In the CNN Money article, Ariely advises cutting down on digital spending and instead starting to pay attention to larger costs. Another tip he offers is using a pre-paid debit card and load ing it up on Mondays, so you can best prepare for the week ahead.But its not all bad news on the spending front. Personal finance expert KyleNakatsuji, CEO and founder of auto insurance startup Clearcover, said that not all of us have become less mindful of how we spend in fact, in some ways, were more mindful of how we spend.With advances in financial technology related to planning, budgeting and analysis, theres an increasing amount of information available to help us make better money-saving decisions, Nakatsuji says. But somehow, we dont seem to be making those smarter decisions.These same kinds of advances have also made it easier than ever to spend money, and continue to spend it. Online shopping is a great example of this, Nakatsuji said. The root cause, however, is the decrease in transaction friction - think of Amazons one-click buy - the increasing ease of setting up products and services is a double-edged sword.Less stupid spendingNakatsuji said that it isnt only the lu xuries that cause overspendingOne place thats typically overlooked is compulsory services, like insurance.Think of it as a different kind of stupid spending. Most things people think of as stupid are unnecessary purchases while we think its equally silly to overpay for things youre required to have like car insurance. In fact, saving money on things youre forced to purchase can create the financial freedom to rationally buy the other things you really want, meaning youll naturally make fewer bad decisions.Dont blame it on MillennialsThough it can be easy to blame digital natives for rampant online spending habits, it isnt quite that black or white (or lack of green). I think spending habits vary more by the person than by demographic because people are intrinsically motivated in similar ways despite their age, Nakatsuji said. For me, its more about the personality than the group. Youll find people across the different generations who place a high value on material goods or experienc es (and therefore may spend more freely), just as youll find a mixed range of people who value frugality.For that reason, its also wise to try to spend less based on your personality type and spending inclinations, rather than the generational labels.
